just, wow, you guys.
Jun. 18th, 2010 02:11 pmSo, I am not in SPN or J2 fandom or whatever the hell fandom is having a hugeass racefail right now, so I was like "oh damn you guys that sucks" and meanwhile RL IS CRAZY
but then I thought
you know what?
THIS week it's a fandom I am not in. Next week? The week after? Totally going to be in my fandom. Because we -- white fans is what I mean by "we" there -- are privileged and ignorant and will keep doing it and keep hurting people and HELLO THERE, maybe we should think about that a little. And work on ourselves a bit, as hard as we work on that shiny shiny story we want to write or the pretty pretty pictures we want to draw.
Maybe that work is reading over and thinking about the racism bingo card. Maybe it's digging up Racism 101 information, or reading Beverly Daniel Tatum or Tim Wise (he's white, white folks! That should make us feel nice and safe!), or finding How to Suppress Discussions of Racism and checking that thing you were gonna say against it.
Maybe that work is finding a beta who is willing to doublecheck your shiny shiny for racial issues. Maybe that work is sitting on the shiny shiny for a week, coming back to it with fresh eyes, and saying to yourself "OK, what social justice issues have I screwed up in here?"
Pick something. Go with it.
Just don't think you don't have any work on yourself to do, because you do. We all do.
