my fic year in review (2018)

I haven’t done one of these in ages. All right.

Number of works posted: 14. Two of these were worldbuilding appendices, and another was a podfic of one of my stories, read by people not-me. So let’s call it 11.

Fandoms: Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes-Star Trek AOS fusion, Lord of the Rings, Thor: Ragnarok, Harry Potter.

Words: 68681, again not counting the appendices. Of the 11 stories, 5 of them are over 8k words. That’s a little weird for me, because I used to write almost exclusively short fiction (sub-2k, usually sub-1k). 

Most comments: Numberless the ways, and imperceptible. Lord of the Rings, Legolas/Gimli. 

Most kudos: same as above! Next-most is on From Sweet Fellowship Comes Nectar, also Legolas/Gimli. It’s a pairing without a ton of writers but with a lot of delightful readers.

Most hits: The two above. Third-place was an infinite series of accidents, the first story in a post-S4 Sherlock series that by itself was nearly 40% of my word-output for the year. 

New territory: Almost everything I wrote this year dealt with gender issues or the asexual/aromantic spectrum, explicitly. Aside from The Silent Man (Thor: Ragnarok, Dec 2017), I’m not sure I ever dealt with these explicitly until 2018, although a queerplatonic relationship is central to all the stories in A Non-Linear Gothic Drama Hypercycle (Sherlock), the first story of which dates to 2010.

Wow. I found you doing a random journal search and boy was I not disappointed. Legolas/Gimli may be one of my favorite all-time pairings and it is so, so underutilized. I'm also just starting to delve in to Sherlock so I was excited to see that you write for that fandom as well. And just under that, sensory issues in a school aged child. My oldest is on the spectrum so that is a list I am very familiar with. *excited waving from the interwebs*

Hello! Nice to meet you. Have you seen the comm gimlixlegolas? It's not super-active but most of the active L/G writers on AO3 are members there.

I have a difficult relationship with Sherlock! I'm a long-time Sherlock Holmes addict -- I still have the copy of Hound of the Baskervilles I bought at a library book sale when I was still in single-digit age range -- and sometimes I want to throw things at this show, and other times I love it deeply. (I also love Elementary, and the Granada series, and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, and the original ACD stories, and.... you get the idea.) At any rate I'm always happy to talk about Sherlock, no matter what.

And I'm always glad to meet other parents! One of my children has mental health challenges and the other has the sensory-processing stuff, and I try to make sure I protect their privacy but I do sometimes need help & support myself. So posts about them probably won't be frequent at all, and will tend to be "wtf do I do"-focused. :)
