laurajv: Rock Out With Your Spock Out (rock out)

Like so many people, I have both the squee and the non-squee.

Quick rundown of the squee:
1. I like alternate-reality timetravel plots more than I like paradox timetravel plots.
2. I've always been fond of moments where Spock loses his control. This movie? Full of 'em.
3. Overall, it was one of the better reboots I've seen; reboots are hard because you can either completely ignore everything that came before or you can try to pull some whackass nonsense to both allow the past and erase it. The latter is harder and you're never going to make everyone happy, but with a huge legacy like Star Trek, I think they had to try. And it was a pretty damn good try!
4. I have always had a soft spot for Spock/Uhura, ever since the first time I saw Charlie X.

Quick rundown of the not-squee:
1. Seriously, no one on Vulcan thought to themselves, hey, maybe we should fly some planes at that planetary drill and cut its tether? Sure, they're a peaceful race, but they have defense systems.
2. Vulcans have been colonizing space for at least 2000 Earth years (that's when the Romulans left). You're going to tell me that in over 2000 years, they only had 10,000 Vulcans off the homeworld? I just plain don't believe it.
3. A set entitled "Seriously, that's what you did with the women?"
3a. Would it have killed you to leave Uhura's clothes on?
3b. NO YOU BE KILLIN AMANDA. (AND ALSO CALLING HER A WHORE. OH NO YOU DIDN'T.)
3c. I bet you killed T'Pau too, you bastards. Seriously. Teeny tiny little hardass female ruler of the entire fucking planet, and she doesn't even turn up? I bet you killed her without even MENTIONING her.
3d. Number One? Paging Number One?

Quick rundown of what Spock Prime needs to tell Kirk/Sarek/the Federation/the Vulcans/whoever about the possible future (look, it's an alternate reality. He's not altering the future; he's saying "in a different reality, here is some stuff that went down. Keep an eye on that."):
1. V'Ger
2. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN
3. The whales
4. Sarek's heart condition
5. Y'all better fix that no female captains thing in Starfleet afore Janice Lester gets medieval on your ass
6. Cloaking devices
7. The Dominion
8. The Borg
9. The Horta (look, he can spare Mother Horta the pain of losing thousands of her race's children just by telling the miners "Hey, at such and such a level, you're going to find round silicon nodules. When that happens, DO NOT DESTROY THEM. Get a telepath in there to talk to the big shaggy rock.")

I've probably forgotten things on all those lists, of course. Talk to me, Obi-Wan Sublist!

I would totally read the series about Spock Prime going around telling people what they need to know.

(And, word on all of Non-Squee 3, except for 3c-- I'm pretty sure the Vulcan High Council woman in the gold dress was meant to be T'Pau. At least, she had T'Pau's hair, makeup, and attitude.)

I did not make it ST this weekend, although I had many plans to do so. Now I have plans to see it tomorrow (but am not holding my breath).

I liked reading your reaction, to prepare me for what's to come.

(although your "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN" cracked me up after seeing so much of him at the SF costume exhibit today. heh)

lol.

I am actually looking at my DW reading page. There be treasures here! hi.

I felt much as you. wheee. I see you're writing. My brain is small overflowing. I need to empty some things out to incorporate back in Star Trek. Man, it's been ages.
