My Old script Idea: Slice Of Life

throughout Middle School and High school I wrote a script. it was a Black Comedy Slasher based on the concept of yandere and was basically a bridge between Anime and Horror Films. (I was really into Slashers and the game DDLC back then) it went through various titles. It was a mix of 2010's meme Culture, 1990's Slashers and 2010's anime

few notable ones are

"[Me] and the Yandere" (because at this point it was a self-insert)

"Love Sick" (which was mocked by a teacher for whatever reason)

"Twisted Obsession" (which I liked but didn't have that ring to it)

and finally

"Slice Of Life" which was the last and title that stuck. (because of some reasons:

It's a anime reference given the Slice Of Life Genre

Slice Of Life as in Slicing someone to death

and it's a pun.

so it fits what i was trying to do)

The structure in my middle school to early high school rewrites were so bad. and was very repetitive and lacked conclusion. it wasn't until late high school where i figured out structure and how to end it in a concise way.

it was only 20 pages long on the last draft with three acts plus a eclipse (which was just the wrap up segment)

there were 4 main characters, three kills and one Major character

(Main Characters) Frank Davis, Johanna Lee, Officer Mark and Officer Jack

Frank Davis was the protagionst being the subject of Johanna's Obession and the average everyman

Johanna was the Antagionst a crazed psycho eqquiped with multiple weapons (A Axe, Knife and Bat) who was involved in a cult

Officer Mark and Jack Two Police characters, didn't really give them much personalities honestly sorta regret that. shouldn't made it a duo cop like Mark is the serious one while Jack is the dumber one. never did that though. infact a good chunk of drafts the only cop to appear is Mark and only in one scene

(Kills) Yuki Ito, Taro Satio, and Aina Abe

Yuki Ito was a anime geek who Befriends Frank. his name comes from Yuki Amano and he was a mix of Natsuki and Randy Meeks

Taro Satio is a bully nothing much else honestly characterization was one of my biggest flaws

Ania Abe was meant to be a Tsundere

(Major Character) Chief Felix

Chief Fliex was the Police Chief and boss of Mark and Jack,

(Scrapped Character) There used to be a narrator that would pop in every so often in earlier drafts to sput out "Philosophical Speeches" (heavy air quotes) but i scrapped the character. though he was a dribute to my favorite movie of all time "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" through if I would've added him back in I'd give him the Name Rod. even in the drafts he was nameless because the character from RHPS was also nameless.

There were two plot lines that all come together in the end.

It's a new year at Frank Davis's School, his parents are out of town for a business trip for the week leaving him alone. while this going on a strange string of murders start to emerge. The murders are Caused by Johanna Lee who are killing to get closer to Frank.

after a accident involving beating a person who sped. officer Mark has one week to solve the murders before he gets the sack.

The comedy mostly came from an endless stream of puns spouted by Johanna. I wanted to make her a cross of Yuno Gasai and Freddy but she is not the only one to quip, the police characters as well. also it's not just quips. that's the majority but there's also visible comedy as well.

I don't have this any longer as i'm outta school. I had it on a thumbdrive but that thing is lost and don't have the same computer anymore.

I'm gonna list some memerble scenes within the 20 page script [Opening] The Script opened with Frank being late to school. so he rides his bike to school with a slice of leftover pizza in his mouth. a clear Homage to the Toast in the mouth anime trope.

[Kills] Three are three deaths Yuki, while helpping clean up. Yuki feels like he's being watched. he ruffles a bush to jump at a cat jumping out of it. he sighs turns around when Johanna is just there with a axe. she cuts his hand off with the axe Johanna: Talk About Being Al-Right (though I wish i made this the line: "well you weren't using that hand anyways")

Taro: The Bully was just hanging outside smoking a ciggerite. when Johanna sneaks but behind him and slits his throat with a knife. Johanna: He always was on the cutting edge

Aina: Aina was in the gym because she had track. Johanna sneaks up behind her with a bat. Johanna: "Batter up" after running Aina Trips over a ball and falls to the ground. after a back and forth Johanna hits her with the bat 3 times. Johanna; Strike Three

[Failed Kidnapping] There was a darkly comedic scene in which Johanna is trying to inject Frank with a syringe. but he keeps dropping notebooks, among other things until he just leaves.

there's a scene where Frank is watching t.v and the news was on. talking about anina's death. her mother shows up for a interview and she quotes a (admittedly very old meme even at the time. at the time i was so into very very very old memes)

"well obivously we have a killer in Watervile High, they're climbing in your windows snatching your people up. trying to kill them so ya need to hide your kids and hide your wife, and hide your husband cause they're killing everybody out there."

I've seen a lot of re-appraisal of this film within the last five years or so, and as a massive fan of David Fincher and the Alien franchise, I find myself revisiting it every couple of years to see if I missed anything. Every time I find myself liking it less and less.

The decision to kill Newt and Bishop doesn't bother me. I'm all for bleak third entries, and I don't think any character should be safe when it comes to horror. However, doing it offscreen feels like a massive waste of potential. It could have been absolutely shocking to see it happen right in front of our eyes, but instead it's just sort of depressing and unsatisfying. Those two words describe the rest of the film as well.

I genuinely can't stand a single character in this fucking movie, and that unfortunately includes Ripley. Maybe it's just because she has nobody likable to bounce off of, but she's not nearly as interesting a character in this one compared to the first two. The minute the prisoners are introduced, I wanted to see them die as quickly as possible.

Much has been said about how bad the Xeno itself looks in this one, so I won't harp on it too much except to say that this was the beginning of the B-Movie-fication of the franchise. The film just looks cheap, drab, and ugly in general.

Never been a fan of Ripley's death, either. Is it fitting that she ultimately sacrifices herself to stop the wrong people getting their hands on the Xeno? Sure. Execution leaves a whole lot to be desired though, and the whole thing comes across as kind of cheesy and overdone in my opinion.

Interested to hear other's thoughts about this, either agreeing or disagreeing. Like I said, I desperately want to like this movie and see in it what other people do, but I just don't get it.

(And yes, I have seen Assembly Cut.)

How did it get to be Christmas Eve? Are we sure? This year has been hard to believe in. I fell asleep in front of the decorated tree. Merry Erev Christmas.

1. I'm so glad I decided to work from home today after all. The rain was really steady all day and I'm glad I wasn't out driving in it.

2. It had rained a bit overnight and was raining slightly when I went for my walk this morning, but I managed not to get very wet at all. Then I almost immediately hopped in the car to go down to Gardena and pick up the Christmas cake. It was raining a bit on the way down and then there was a sudden downpour right before I got to the bakery, but it stopped before I arrived. Got my cake and had almost no rain on the way back, but then it really let loose as soon as I was a few blocks from home lol. I had to dash in the house, but at least then I didn't have to go out anymore.

3. There was a few hour break in the rain in the late afternoon and early evening, so we got some more walking done and were able to take the trash out to the outside bins (Thursday is our usual trash day but of course they're not going to pick up until Friday this week; still, we like to get everything out on schedule, especially since we'll be out all day tomorrow).

4. When the rain was only drizzly this afternoon, the doorbell rang and I assumed it was a package, but it was the little boy across the street who was bringing homemade gifts to all the neighbors. Not sure if everyone was getting the same, but we got some chocolate coated Chex mix. Tasty! And very nice of them.

5. I forgot to mention yesterday but we did get the car back. I really wanted to get it back before the holidays and before the rain, so it was good timing. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong with either car for a while.

6. Look at Ollie all tucked in! That's actually not a blanket covering him, or rather, it's a wearable blanket with a hood. It's been very cozy now that the temps are down, but when I'm not wearing it, I leave it folded up on my bed and the cats just love to lie on it. (Or under it, in Ollie's case last night, though that was my doing. He did stay there, though.)

When the horror film part is generic, but passable. You have to wade through crappy folk song montages and emotional melodrama to get to it.

(And then there is the damn bird…)

This thing has been floating around Hollywood for over 40 years, apparently.

It could have kept waiting.

For a long time I thought that this was a horror staple that everyone had seen, and while I don’t think it’s a “hidden gem” by any means (it’s still quite well known), it remains criminally underseen.

Directed by the legend behind A Christmas Story and Superbabies:Baby Geniuses 2, Black Christmas has a strong case for being the first true “slasher flick” ever made, and is also the originator of a number of horror tropes that would be repeated later on, such as the “creepy phone call” and the “POV of the killer” shot.

I cannot emphasize enough how fucking awesome this movie is. The phone calls in the movie are still absolutely vile to this day and the whole movie has a great Christmas atmosphere. In my opinion, it’s held up incredibly well.

Figured now was a great time to recommend it and hopefully some others can share their thoughts on the film in the comments!

I can remember seeing the trailer for the first time and thinking, at first, it was an adaptation of his book Intensity. I even took a friend who is not a big horror fan but a big reader to watch it with me when it first came out and during the first couple minutes she thought it was an adaptation of Intensity as well. Has this ever been addressed or commented on by either Dean Koontz or Alexandre Aja?

Considering the state of my finances this year, I wasn't expecting to be able to get the Adagio advent calendar for December. Someone sent me a gift card as an early Christmas present, though, so I got to stick with the tradition after all.

It was 24 days for a total of 24 different teas, and - as usual - they tried to provide a fairly nice mix of very different types of teas. Some were great, some very much weren't, but they were all definitely different.

Teas under the cut. )

Review: A Chorus, Divergent anthology

A Chorus, Divergent anthology by Reckoning Press

A special issue featuring reprints by neurodivergent creators from Reckoning’s first decade.

Essays, poetry, fiction, and art by Oluwatomiwa Ajeigbe, E.C. Barrett, Kaye Boesme, Offor Chidera, Jacob Coffin, Kelsey Day, Tania Fordwalker, Abbie Goldberg, A.P. Golub, Ruth Joffre, Taylor Jones, Laura McKnight, Kat Murray, Micah Nemerever, Mari Ness, Ellis Nye, Maria S. Picone, T.K. Rex, Ariadne Starling, and Adam Stemple, with new cover artwork by Abi Stevens.

I read quite a few anthologies this year and this was one of the best. It has some real stellar stories that I'll be thinking about for a long time, and some new writers that I definitely want to see more from. The stories are all speculative fiction and many dance with the climate apocalypse in its many forms and stages.

The real knock-out of the whole book was SQUAWKER AND DOLPHIN SWIMMING TOGETHER. I am a sucker for animal communication stories, and dolphins, and climate disasters and finding glimmers of hope amongst the rubble. There was so many cleaver plot threads dropped in here and there, the story felt like a much longer and fleshed out novel. (I've already preordered their upcoming anthology!)

Also shout out to The Blackthorn Door and Fixing the System in Tilt Town, both with really interesting worldbuilding. And a nod to Icediver, which started off strong but I feel like the wheels fell off halfway through.

I didn't dip into the poetry but if it's of the same quality of the fiction than it's pretty good too.

The entire anthology is free to read online or follow the links to support through an indie bookseller.

Another beautiful winter day.

I spent the whole day fixing up the road from last night's  2 inches of rain.  Lots of digging out ditches for the first two hours and then three hours of work on the culvert near the main gate.  Dad put the 30" (?, it is big) culvert in around 1965.   At that time the neighbor took a bulldozer into the creek and cleaned out all of the vegetation.  No one would be allowed to do that these days, but back then no one noticed.  As time went by willow, blackberry and cottonwood trees grew up, dramatically slowing the flow of water below the culvert.  Above the culvert silt slowly began building up. And up.  Then the willow and cottonwoods started to fall.   They weren't sick, they were just old.   That blocked the exit of the culvert  where even more silt built up.  About eight years ago I realized there was a crisis with the culvert.  Water had to first go down to reach the culvert, then up on the other side to exit.  Donald and I spent two days fighting our way down into the stream with a chainsaw and clearing out dead wood.  It helped, some.  Since then I've been down there several times, each time clearing more.  Today I mostly cleared willow that had regrown into the creek, once again making it impassable.   Last week a huge very dead old cottonwood finally fell on the road right over the culvert.  We have been watching that tree just waiting for a windstorm to jiggle it a little.

Yesterday's trip up Red Barn Creek to work on trail maintenance was lovely.  Kinda wet, but lovely.
You may remember that I went off with some of the folks from the Grace Hudson Museum ( https://www.gracehudsonmuseum.org/ ) to pick Dogbane, sometimes called Indian Hemp. At the time I didn't post a picture of the plant. Here is a clump of Dogbane growing -in- the creek.  There is a small green bit of grass coming up through the clump. This is the right time to harvest these plants, the stems will need to dry before use, but the plant is dormant.

sixbeforelunch: casette tapes, no text (cassette tapes)
[personal profile] sixbeforelunch
What if there’s no ethical way to have unlimited access to every book, film, and record ever created? And moreover, what if that’s not something we should want?

What if we simply decided to consume less media, allowing us to have a deeper appreciation for the art we choose to spend our time with? What if, instead of having an on-demand consumer mindset that requires us to systematically strip art of all its human context, we developed better relationships with creators and built new structures to support them? What if we developed a politics of refusal — the ability to say enough is enough — and recognized that we aren’t powerless to the whims of rich tech CEOs who force this dystopian garbage down our throats while claiming it’s “inevitable?”

Tapes and other physical media aren’t a magic miracle cure for late-stage capitalism. But they can help us slow down and remember what makes us human. Tapes make music-listening into an intentional practice that encourages us to spend time connecting with the art, instead of frantically vibe-surfing for something that suits our mood from moment-to-moment. They reject the idea that the point of discovering and listening to music is finding the optimal collection of stimuli to produce good brain chemicals.

So, let me preface this with the fact that I've seen this movie discussed to hell and back and for the longest time I just didn't see the hype, I had watched it one time a while back and it just didn't strike me as anything special and as a matter of fact I thought it was kind of awful. The acting was pretty bad, the plot didn't make a whole lot of sense, the pacing was all over the place, I felt nothing for the characters at all because they were all just straight up annoying.

So it had always been surprising to me that everyone seemed to love it so much, though this isn't the only movie that I've had a hard time grasping the appeal for, a couple of other movies are VVitch, and The Lighthouse, not that they're bad movies but I just didn't get the hype and I found both to be pretty boring. At least the acting in those movies was on point though, Martyrs was just atrocious. Well, reading through one of the more recent Martyrs threads someone had mentioned how bad the American remake was in comparison to the original French film, it was at that point that I realized I may have in fact only watched the American remake, although I could've sworn I'd seen the French film. Thankfully both versions are up on Tubi, so I threw on the original French film to give it a re-watch and see if I was missing something.

Yeah I was missing something alright, I'm a fucking idiot, apparently this whole time I'd only seen the American remake and I had in fact never seen the French film. Now I can understand why people say to just watch the French version, holy shit that movie was wild, the acting was on point, I actually felt something for the characters. Not only that but the story made sense and was so incredibly bleak, it really might be one of the best "horror" movies I've ever seen. Well, after watching that I decided to throw on the American remake just to see if it was really as bad as I'd remembered it to be, fuck it may have even been worse than I remembered. How in the fuck did they botch it so hard?

It really baffles me that they took such an amazing movie and turned it into whatever the fuck the remake was, it was a pile of hot garbage. What's funny is this isn't even the first time that this has happened to me, I'd heard a ton of hype about the movie Oldboy and somehow I didn't catch that there were two versions so I ended up watching the American version. To be fair to that film though, it was at least coherent and I enjoyed it for the most part, I also ended up finding out that there was a Korean version and it was of course far superior but the American flick was at least watchable and entertaining with some flaws. The Martyrs remake was just downright awful for lack of something more descriptive.

So if you haven't seen Martyrs or if you're an idiot like me who has only seen the American version, do yourself a favor and watch the French film, it's so fucking good.
