I think, in a lot of ways, this was a conversation that Spock wasn't mature enough to have until it was too late to have it; perhaps if Sarek hadn't gotten ill, they could've found their way -- but he did, and they didn't.
Though perhaps that Sarek couldn't've had it with Spock at all; it is hard to know. Such still waters, those two.
