a thing I am seeing more & more in fanfic these days is authors marking out sex scenes as "optional", and giving people info on where to skip if you don't want to read that part.

and! like! more tools for curating one's reading experience! care for your audience! that's -- I understand where it's coming from, is what I'm saying.

but it also means the sex scenes are really, really boring. Like. so boring. because if they're optional extra scenes, they aren't there to illuminate character or plot, they're just there to be....sex. this is the most boring kind of sex, in fiction or real life. it's so boring that the few times i have bothered to read one of these optional scenes my eyeballs turned to dust and my heart shriveled up like a prune and my liver withered and my vagina locked and barred the door.

I've always skimmed way more sex scenes than I read, because frankly most people aren't good at writing sex that illuminates character or plot, but some of the optional scenes make normal boring sex writing look like high erotic art.

yes, i am being very mean here, but that's because it should be impossible to write sex this boring AND YET here human beings go, managing it handily! once again humankind does the impossible! go us! this is up there with airplanes and telecommunication!

also, there are some things i don't like about oldschool slash aesthetics in fanfic but i gotta say when you have 90% oldschool slash aesthetics in your fanfic but also use "cum" as a verb i get whiplash. but that is a rant for another time, even though it is Related to the whole incredibly boring sex thing.

comments

Hey so broke & dislocated ribs, very fun times for me. I'm healing up pretty well, as these things go.

One thing I did run into is that -- look, I am very busty. My usual bra is a 34K, and that means I have to wear a bra to keep the weight of the breast itself off the damaged rib -- but of course the bra hurts, too. So I went looking for how to manage that situation and I....not that I don't understand the impulse to help? but people who have naturally smaller breasts -- by which I mean anything under an F-cup UK sizes for small band sizes, it's different at larger band sizes -- need to stop giving breast management tips to people with large breasts. The difference in managing these situations is substantial. (And I noticed SEVERAL people with, like, 36B-cup breasts offering advice and then there was a gap in reported cup sizes and then F+ cup people came in, which -- my GENERAL experience is that people with C+ cups understand there's a management difference, and a LOT of B-cup people absolutely the fuck do not, and it's incredibly annoying. Like C-DD people are all "ooh, that has to suck" and B people are "I have useful advice" YOU DO NOT, STFU.)

Like. I'm sorry. Layering two camisoles is a small boob support trick. And all the small boob people replying to large boob broken rib people had suggestions like that -- two camis! lightweight compression top! front-close bralette! etc.

Actual large boob people tips were very different and were things like "use gaffer tape to relocate the weight of the breast" and "buy an entirely new bra with these specific qualities".

By the way, here's what worked for me:
- a back brace for additional support/preventing me from moving in ways that hurt
- using kinesthesiology tape (instead of gaffer tape) to shift the weight of my breast to my upper pectoral area & collarbone -- this provided instant and substantial relief.
- using a bra expander to make my band a little less firm, but still allow support for the bust

Some people report success with basques sized up a band size or two, but I have not tried that, because I had all the other stuff in my house.

comments

if anyone has any ideas where to get very soft, but NO COTTON, pull-on trousers or leggings for kids, please let me know. zippers very much not preferred.

my kids love very soft cotton clothes, but that is actively dangerous for overnight hikes in cool weather, so I'm on a quest for things that will protect them from ticks, wick moisture, and unlike cotton, won't give them hypothermia if it rains.

edit, 9/15/21: what turned out to work best for my particular kids was Eddie Bauer Extra Mile Trail Tight Leggings. These are available in the "girl" section of Eddie Bauer online. Both my kids are nonbinary & love leggings in all colors, luckily for me.

comments
